I'm a Fictionista

The big project: to finish a draft of the novel by the end of the summer. I'm not off to a very good start (thanks to this website and nine-page poker posts), but I'm trying to get my act together, even if I've been failing at that particular project for years and years.

I also write short stories, and I've got, in various states of completion, a bunch of those. I'm going to start putting some of those stories on this site, in serialized form, a few pages a week.

You see, I've got to whore those babies and find me a publisher. Step one: find an agent. I could write letters and send stories out, but that would involve organization and dedication on my part, and organized and dedicated are two adjectives that could never be applied to me, unless you were being a smart-ass, and, really, that's beneath you.

How to find an agent, then? The old-fashioned way: through sex and out-sourcing. So, if you've ever slept with, are currently sleeping with, or plan to sleep with an agent (no pressure, but it would really help me out), point them to this here website.

Call for Submissions

I am editing an anthology of short fiction by Latinos/as in which the City of Los Angeles plays an integral role. I am interested in provocative stories on virtually any subject by both established and new writers. Stories may range from social realism to cuentos de fantasma and anything in between. Los Angeles may be a major "character" or merely lurking in the background. I'd like to see characters who represent diverse backgrounds in terms of ethnicity, profession, age, sexual orientation, etc.

Preferred length: 500 to 5,000 words. Stories may be previously published (please indicate where). Chapters from novels will be considered if they can stand alone. Award-winning publisher is interested but wants to see final manuscript.

Please e-mail your story, using standard submission formatting, as a Word document to olivasdan@aol.com. In the e-mail, include your contact information, list of previous publications (if any), and the ethnicity(ies) with which you identify. Website: www.danielolivas.com

DEADLINE: September 1, 2005.
